Abstract
The study investigated Nigeria's peacebuilding role in West Africa, focusing on the power of dialogue and consultation in fostering regional stability. The aim of the study was to assess Nigeria's contributions to peace processes in West Africa, particularly its use of diplomatic dialogue and consultations to resolve conflicts. The scope of the study covered Nigeria’s involvement in key peacebuilding efforts, including its role in mediating regional conflicts such as those in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Côte d'Ivoire. The study adopted a qualitative methodology, utilizing documentary analysis, interviews with diplomats, peacekeeping experts, and policy documents to examine Nigeria's diplomatic strategies. The theoretical framework of the study was based on the Conflict Resolution Theory, which emphasizes negotiation, mediation, and dialogue as essential tools in peacebuilding. The findings of the study revealed that Nigeria has played a pivotal role in facilitating dialogue and consultations in West Africa, contributing to conflict resolution and post-conflict rebuilding. The study concluded that Nigeria’s diplomatic efforts have been instrumental in promoting stability and peace in the region. Therefore, the study recommended that Nigeria continue to strengthen its peacebuilding initiatives by expanding its engagement with regional actors, increasing support for mediation processes, and leveraging its influence within international organizations to sustain peace in West Africa.
